Well, after a great trip up to Mt Garibaldi, we decided on Mt Matier in the Joffrey group.
We hiked up to the Cherise Creek hut relatively late on Saturday and enjoyed the hut atmosphere. The mosquitoes were horrendous so we were stuck inside the hut. There were two large families who came up with their grandmother to celebrate her 80th b-day. Way to go lady!
We had a somewhat restful night, after playing pente until we felt like we disturbed the others. Oh well, the good old hut life.
In the morning we got up early and hiked up the scree slopes to the glacier. There we roped up and made our way up the crevassed piece of ice until we reached the pass between Joffrey and Matier. Our objective was to go around the back of Matier and climb a 5.7 buttress. After another hour of slogging, we finally got there. The rock looked so rotten and unprotectable, that we decided to go up the normal route. So way we went around the back again to slog up the steep snow/ice slopes to finally reach the summit around 12pm.
We were rewarded with beautiful views and a stunning scenery of the surrounding peaks and glaciers.
We had a relatively easy way down the glacier and even stopped to practice some crevasse rescue techniques. The scree slopes below the glacier were a bit more challenging, but at 4pm we were back safely at the hut.
After a bit of humming an hawing, we decided to head back to Squamish and climb the Chief via the Squamish Buttress.
