2009 Climbing Adventures

Indian Creek, Round 2

Tales of another adventure south to escape the cold November rain.

On this trip, we travel back to Cracklandia (Indian Creek); land of love, fun and splitters.

Our annual migration started just as it did last year, a brunch with Remo's Canadian mom Susan, followed by a short drive to Rossland to visit the Pecks for a little Halloween fun.  The we started the 24 hour non stop drive through the night, making it within 2 hours of Moab before our eyes got too heavy and we pulled over for a rest. We got to Moab and promptly met my brother and Heather at the local café and got caffeinated for our first day in the dessert.

Team Wurtele wanted to swim and Team Krimo wanted to climb, so we compromised on Potash Road to satisfy both our needs; both the river and the cliffs are separated only by a narrow road. However, the water was too cold so the triathletes went running and the climbers hauled our heavy selves up a couple routes. As you all know, for professional ironman triathletes, running alone does not suffice, so Trevor and Heather went riding and we took it easy, though the 30 pack of beer wasn't light (that is in weight - it was definitely light in alcohol volume).

Later that evening Team Wurtele barely made it to Indian Creek (Trevor was suffering from low-blood-sugar-nothing-is-fucking-right-i-hate-this syndrome) but they pushed through some long, rough roads to get there and I'm very grateful they did. It was great to spend a little time with them, even if it was only a little. The next day they continued their training adventure to find a swimming pool (which is almost non existant in Utah) as we continued our beer adventure to find a one with more than 3.2% alcohol (which is almost non existant in Utah).

Moving on without good beer, Remo and I started cranking for the next three days, through the pain, the aches and the fatigue that you get from a good Indian Creek spanking. We ticked off some classics, climbed a few new ones, and finally had a rest day on the fifth day. After talking with quite a few climbers, we discovered that most people climb for two days then take one day off because climbing the consistent splitter cracks at I.C. works out every muscle in your body - ones not normally used for climbing. We remained pretty tired for the rest of the trip, the last few days we only saw one or two routes, but we still managed to climb some amazing stuff.

I'll speak for the both of us when I say that climbing Super Crack was the highlight of the trip. It is the climb that started it all at Indian Creek; an aest hetic, perfect hand/fist crack after a fun, bouldery start. Remo and I both climbed it clean on lead, and the most exciting part about was watching each other send it. More than succeeding ourselves, seeing each other reach the top was the best part!

We took lots of photos and made a video about it too...

Thanks for sharing in our adventures!
